VERY GOOD PAUL MERSON LAUDS-TOTTENHAM DUO AFTER STUNNING WIN V MARSEILLE TONIGHT

VERY GOOD PAUL MERSON LAUDS Paul Merson has stated that Rodrigo Bentancur was ‘very good’ for Tottenham Hotspur as they progressed to the knockout stages of the Champions League after their 2-1 win against Marseille on Tuesday night, as he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports News.

Tottenham were all over the place in the first half, and on the stroke of half-time, former Newcastle United defender Chancel Mbemba powered his side into the lead with a brilliant header.

At that moment, Spurs were heading to the Europa League, with Antonio Conte having a face like thunder from the stands – he was serving a touchline ban after getting sent off against Sporting Lisbon last time out.

Many will still question why it takes up until the second half for Spurs to turn up, but at the end of the day, it’s all about the end result.

This could also have a big bearing on what happens during the January transfer window because the Premier League side can still use Champions League football to perhaps lure a few big names to the club.

But, like Spurs have been doing for the past few weeks, they turned it up in the second half, with Clement Lenglet scoring the all-important goal to level the scores.

Then, as the French side tried chasing that goal, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scored a brilliant stoppage-time winner to all but seal Tottenham’s route to the knockout stages.

Bentancur wasn’t the only player who impressed Paul Merson because he felt that Harry Kane was causing Marseille ‘all sorts of problems’ in that second half.

“Bentancur robs the defender, he has been really good, they have released him more forward,” said Merson. “He has been very good in this second half.

“Kane knew it (for his offside goal). But he is causing them problems. They look like a much better team, Tottenham, in this second half.”
